Festival of Leaves Week #6: A Royal Carpet

Welcome! While my camera and I usually wander much further afield, a quiet turn of events has kept me close to home again this week. Thankfully, nature has a wonderful way of bringing the show right to my doorstep. For Dawn’s “Festival of Leaves” I didn’t have to travel any further than our front lawn to find my inspiration.

Right outside my front door, our magnificent Red Maple has reached its absolute peak, casting a brilliant glow that feels anything but humdrum. The afternoon sun catches the backlit leaves just right and, looking down at the grass, it feels as though a rich, scarlet carpet has been laid out, as if for a grand autumn celebration. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed processing this simple collection of images from our own little patch of the Carolinian, and I am delighted to share our front garden with you all today.

A Royal Carpet

The lawn is dressed in royal style,
A scarlet path across the yard.
Where crimson leaves have come to rest,
Like carpets for a palace guard.

The afternoon’s bright, gentle sun
Shines through the branches, warm and clear.
It lights the crown of brilliant red
At this, the peak of all the year.

We watch it from the window pane,
A tree so magnificent and grand.
The finest show of autumn gold
And brightest red in all the land.

Thank you so much for stopping by my little corner of the world today to share in this quiet afternoon. There is something so incredibly comforting about watching the seasons change, from the cosy warmth of home, especially when the view right outside the window is this spectacular. Though my feet couldn’t wander today, my heart certainly did, right along the edges of that beautiful crimson carpet.

As the sun dips lower and the autumn air turns a little cooler, I’m content to stay snug inside with a warm cuppa to hand, feeling profoundly grateful for the simple yet magnificent gifts right at our doorstep. I would love to hear how the autumn colors are shaping up in your neck of the woods, so please leave a comment below. Until next time, stay cosy, stay warm, and may your own days be filled with unexpected pops of color.

Thanks to Dawn for sharing her artistic vision for “Festival of Leaves”. Please take a moment to visit her site to admire the spectacular image she’s featuring this week, you’ll be glad you did:

’Til next time, y’all…

I love the wonderful warmth of your images, of your poem’s imagery, and your reflections on the closeness of autumn (a view and carpet just outside one’s doors). The sense of the profound in the pattern of leaves each autumn is sublime. Your images and words carry that sentiment to perfection, Pam. Thanks for a beautiful, peaceful, and peace-filled share.
