Today arrived wrapped in a seamless, comfortable gray, bringing a gentle rain that stripped the final colors from the neighborhood and left many trees beautifully bare. Inside, our day took an industrious turn as Cam tackled a stubborn leak under the sink, trading a quiet morning for a jigsaw puzzle of black plumbing pipes. Yet, between the drain dilemma, a quick lunch, and the steady mist outside, there was a profound sense of rightness to it all—a quiet assurance that both nature and home are exactly as they should be.

A Beautiful Certainty
The sky is a heavy, seamless sheet of grey,
not bleak, but comforting,
like a worn wool coat pulled tight against the chill.
Against it, the tree stands completely open—
every intricate branch, every fine line etched like a pencil sketch
drawn directly onto the morning.
A very fine rain is gently falling,
softening the edges of the world,
washing away the last remaining traces of autumn.
The bright chrysanthemums have vanished from the storefronts,
replaced now by the deep, rich green of Christmas boughs
and tidy bundles of firewood stacked and waiting.
There is a beautiful certainty in this naked landscape.
No sadness in the empty boughs,
no urgency in the falling mist.
It is simply nature stepping into its next room,
quiet, orderly, and peaceful.
My world is exactly as it should be.
There is a distinct, grounding peace in realizing that a gray, rainy day is not bleak, but simply nature stepping into its next room. Looking out at the bare branches etched against the sky brings a beautiful certainty that everything is in its proper season. Even our messy morning feels like a natural part of this cosy, autumn rhythm. The world outside has settled into its winter rest, and inside, we are happily doing the same.
’Til next time, y’all…
