Threads of the Rural Trail: Week 4

Klassen Blueberry Farm, CR 50, Harrow

Welcome back to Threads of the Rural Trail, friends. Throughout the cold months ahead, I will be sharing a favourite barn quilt photograph alongside a single, weekly stanza. Together, we will stitch these verses line by line into a complete, collective poem by spring.

As the autumn days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there is nothing quite like sharing the comforting stories stitched into our countryside. This week, our journey takes us west along County Road 50 to Harrow, ON for a truly sweet piece of local history.

Perched beautifully on the barn wall is a lovely variation of the classic Alabama Beauty quilt block—this particular design features four rich green leaves meeting to cradle a bright sapphire-blue berry at its heart.

The history here is just as sweet as the fruit. Begun in 1960, the Klassen family farm welcomed pick-your-own berry lovers for more than three wonderful decades. Every single summer, the family opened their hearts and fields to over fifty thousand visitors. Though the busy picking seasons sadly came to a close in 2014, their beautiful red barn and its vibrant quilt block still proudly stand today, a beautiful reminder of the happy memories shared by so many guests over the years.

A quiet farm where summers used to bloom,
Four painted leaves now guard a sapphire prize;
Though fields are still, the barn dispels the gloom
And brings the past back right before our eyes.

Thank you so very much for stopping by and rambling the rural trail with me today. Your company truly brightens these winter days! As you step away from the screen, I hope you carry a bit of the cosy warmth of these quilt memories with you into your week. Please do come back and visit again next Friday morning—our next stop is already waiting, and I can’t wait to share it with you. Until then, stay safe and warm.

’Til next time, y’all…
