Do old barns call to you, like they do to me? The grand old wooden barn, set firmly atop its stone foundation is, in my opinion, the most inspiring architecture to grace rural Ontario. For me, barns are endlessly fascinating and evocative of times gone by when life was simpler — magic and nostalgia.
Every old barn is possessed of an exclusive history. Just imagine… The family who built it, the livestock that dwelt in its shelter, storing the harvest, the calving, feeding, milking, the farm dog following his master everywhere, and children playing in the loft.

Outside, the lap siding might be well-tortured by mother nature but inside everything is different. The inside is perfect – those enormous, hand-hewn beams remain as strong as ever they were and if you’re very quiet, you can hear them whisper and sigh, sharing their stories and memories…

The Whispering Beams
They stand as monuments of old,
Across the fields of autumn gold,
With weathered sides and foundations gray,
Where silent giants watch the day.
The crimson vines of autumn cling
To silvered wood where swallows wing,
While modern sails turn far behind,
Stirred gently by the seasonal wind.
Within the shadows, soft and deep,
A century of memories sleep—
The lowing herd, the swallow’s nest,
The quiet hour of evening rest.
The hand-hewn beams stand true and strong,
To keep the changing season’s song,
And if you listen close you will,
Hear them whisper old secrets still.
’Til next time, y’all…
