Sunday Stills: The Bug Lady’s Scary, Creepy Crawlies

Since it is Sunday Stills…. European Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa)

The calendar tells us that Hallowe’en is creeping near, and today’s Sunday Stills prompt invites us to look at what is “scary” in the animal kingdom. Now, some folks might shudder, pass by quickly, or even shake a little at the mere mention of multi-legged critters. I seem to have earned the affectionate title of “Bug Lady”—and lo and behold, I wear that badge with great pride!

While none of these spectacular creatures scare me in the least, I know they might give others a playful fright. So, with a wink and a nod to the season, I invite you to step into my world of gentle enchantment and take a close look at a few of my favorite, non-too-spooky trail companions.

So…. Just what is #scary in the animal kingdom?

Dark Fishing Spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus
Round-necked Longhorn Beetle (Clytus ruricola)
Cross Orbweaver (Araneus diadematus)
European Paper Wasp (Polistes dominula)
Invasive Species
Domestic House Spider (Tegenaria domestica)
Differential Grasshopper (Melanoplus differentialis)
Bold Jumping Spider (Phidippus audax)
Giant Burrowing Mayfly (Hexagenia)
Crane Fly (Tipulidae)
Black and Yellow Garden Spider (Argiope aurantia)

Gentle Enchantment on a Spooky Trail

The autumn winds begin to blow,
The leaves are turning gold and red,
And down along the rural trail,
The tiny creatures softly tread.

They call me “Bug Lady” everywhere,
Because I pause at every stone,
To find the beauty hidden deep,
Where quiet, wild things make their home.

A fishing spider rests on rock,
A longhorn beetle mimics stings,
An orbweaver hangs upside down,
With silver lace upon her wings.

The giant crane fly dances by,
The jumping spider turns its head,
While grasshoppers in olive gowns,
Are leaping through the garden bed.

So though the season whispers fright,
And ghosts and goblins start to play,
These lovely, little, creepy things
Bring joy to every autumn day.

Thanks to Terri for the frightening prompt of the week. Trust me, you’re going to absolutely love her post — she’s assembled an incredibly creepy and oh-so-scary collection of critters and her photographs of them are stunning:

’Til next time, y’all…

Again, since it is Sunday Stills….  Chinese Praying Mantis (Tenodera sinensis)
