‘Though few trees in Kingsville have changed yet, here in the Carolinian, there is a gentle enchantment in the autumn canopy that often gets overlooked in the rush for brilliant scarlets and fiery oranges. While the maples command the crowd’s attention, my eyes are always drawn down into the ravine to the soft, buttery yellows of the majestic Ash trees. Looking out from my balcony, these golden leaves appear like unexpected splashes of sunshine scattered amongst the deep green—a subtle, fleeting splendour that brings its own beautiful light to these October afternoons.

Splendour in the Subtle
While others chase the copper flames,
The scarlet maples, proud and bold,
The quiet ash tree softly claims
An underrated crown of gold.
A gentle splash of autumn sun
Stirred lightly into fading green,
Where summer’s work is nearly done
And golden ribbons weave between.
With compound leaves like tiny hands
That catch the late October breeze,
It paints the wild Carolinian lands
In quiet, buttery symphonies.
Let others look for glowing red,
I’ll take this soft, sun-dappled glow—
A canopy of light o’erhead,
A secret splendour down below.
