The Flower Hour #46: PQR – One of Each

Prairie Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata)
Forest Phlox (Phlox divaricata)
Sometimes called Woodland Phlox.

Fun Fact:  Because it blooms early in the spring, it is a critical food source for butterflies, when many other plants are still dormant, specifically Swallowtail Butterflies.

Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota)

Fun Fact:  Legend says Queen Anne pricked her finger with her needle whilst making lace. A single drop of blood fell onto the white fabric. That drop became the single, tiny, dark red flower in the center of the Queen Anne’s lace blossom.

Ranunculus: Meadow Buttercup (Ranunculus acris)

Fun Fact:  The scientific name, Ranunculus, means “little frog” in Latin.

Thanks to Terri for another Flower Hour prompt. Her post is utterly brilliant – lovely images, wry humour, great information — the lot! Please take a moment to read her post and enjoy her lovely photographs; it’ll be the happiest time of your day, promise:

’Til next time, y’all…

  1. Your photos are amazing.

    1. Thank you very much! pp

  2. Fab florals, Pam! Gorgeously captured! I think I’ve seen all four of those flowers growing here!

    1. Okay, truth, I’ve forgotten nearly all the US geography I learned in school. but, I think we’re close to the same latitude. Kingsville is about 175 km south of Boise (the only city I know in Idaho and you, my sweet, can stop laughing at me now). I think it isn’t surprising at all that a lot of our wildflowers overlap with yours. xx

      1. I just google mapped Kingsville. It is same latitude as northern Utah and Northern California. Spokane (nine mile falls) is 47 degrees north, about the same as Quebec city and Zurich, Switzerland. And our elevation is about 2100 feet. We both get snow so these flowers in common must like winter.

      2. Thank you!

  3. A beautiful selection of wildflowers! I especially like your photo of the phlox – the delicate color is gorgeous. Visiting from the Flower Hour

    1. Thank you so much! It is a beauty, especially so when they are covered in Swallowtails! pp

  4. Your pictures are stunning. I was trying to think of renunculas. My sister-in-law had a garden full of them.

    1. I’ll bet it was a spectacular sight! They’re so bright and happy looking. pp
