Swamp Vervain is an herbaceous perennial of the Verbena family. It is native to Ontario, thriving in our province’s natural wetlands and wet meadows and along stream banks. Juncos, Cardinals, and Sparrows eat the flower’s seeds and rabbits eat the leaves.
Amethyst and Emerald
Where emerald reeds catch the breeze,
And marshlands dip to muddy knees,
A crown of jewel-toned lances rise—
Deep purple spires against the skies.
Like velvet gems of royal hue,
They drink the sun and morning dew,
Amethyst spikes among the jade,
A secret wealth that will not fade.
Oh, rich and wild the swampy floor,
That’s paved with mud — a precious ore,
Where swaying grasses fill the space
Guarding towers of purple grace!
