Welcome back to our little corner of the woods!

If you step outside in Kingsville this afternoon, you might find yourself checking the calendar twice. It is a gloriously warm, sun-drenched day, and our wee patch of the Carolinian forest is absolutely putting on a show. The light is filtering through the canopy like liquid amber, casting everything in that perfect, lazy golden hour glow. It feels less like late October and more like summer forgot its coat and turned back to find it.

I was feeling so inspired by the sheer, unadulterated joy of today’s weather that I couldn’t help but capture it in a bit of verse. Grab a cool drink (I just did), find a patch of sun, and enjoy this whimsical little ode to an afternoon that felt purely magical.

From our balcony.

A Whimsical October Alchemy

A mid-October afternoon,
dressed up in summer’s clothes,
Where Kingsville wears a golden crown
and autumn winds repose.

The spicebush giggles in the sun,
the sassafras turns bright,
As if the local wizard spilled
a jar of amber light.

The tulip trees are talking tech
with chicory and burr,
While every little woolly mouse
is polishing its fur.

Wee patches of the ancient woods
are throwing quite a ball—
A sunny, warm, and wicked-glad,
decidedly whimsical Fall.

’Til next time, y’all…

  1. Beautiful and full of joy, both images and your poem, Pam. I love the idea of “tulips talking tech with chicory and burr”…that’s brilliant.
