Wings of Cream and Rust

American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis)

The butterflies were playing in our pollinator garden yesterday and a pair of Cabbage Whites fluttered all around my head. Twice. It made for a truly magical moment.

Fun Fact: In folklore, the appearance of a white butterfly inside a home or flying directly around someone (me!) was often considered a sign of good luck, a successful harvest, or a peaceful change in the seasons.

American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis)

Wings of Cream and Rust

An American Lady, styled in lace,
Alights with soft and silent grace,
To trace the zinnia’s golden crown,
Before the autumn sun goes down.

Beside her dancing in the breeze,
A Cabbage White drifts through the trees,
A flash of snow, a playful glance,
To join the bright, late-summer dance.

With wings of charcoal, cream, and rust,
They sprinkle joy like silver dust,
And turn a quiet afternoon
Into a sweet, delightful tune.
