A rogue and uninvited guest makes for the perfect poetic muse.
Motherwort is an herbaceous, non-native, invasive (and very pretty) perennial plant in the mint family. Also, colloquially, known as Lion’s Tail. Originally from Central Asia and southeastern Europe, it was brought to North America by Herbalists and Naturopaths because of its supposed efficacy in treating Heart Palpitations and Rapid Heart Rate. This cheeky wee beauty made her way into our pollinator garden uninvited.
The Cheeky Usurper
A lone, rogue stranger, bold and green,
Stepped unbid upon the scene.
With jagged leaves and stealthy art,
It claimed a corner of the heart.
A modern tonic, ancient cure,
Its wild intentions seemed so pure—
A secret healing, hidden grace,
Tucked neatly in a stolen space.
But fields of native blooms await,
And boundaries must guard the gate.
So fare thee well, sweet lion’s tail,
Your brief, unprompted season fails.
With gentle hand and careful pull,
We keep the wild space rich and full.
