I love daisies. They’re so friendly.
Don’t you think daisies are the friendliest flower?*
One of the first things I noticed when we moved to south-west Ontario is the distinct lack of wild Daisies. Everywhere else in our province, they dominate roadsides, meadows — virtually everywhere that wildflowers grow. But not here. And I am a Daisy girl. Have been ever since I was wee, picking them for Mum in the field beside our home. Of course I would notice their absence here. I understand why — our extreme agricultural footprint, the county’s aggressive roadside weed management (Oxeyes are a non-native invasive species) and, probably the main reason, soil preferences. Daisies are famous for thriving in nutrient-poor, sandy, or gravelly soils — the opposite of what we have here in Essex. Still, I do so miss them!
A single bloom in a bucolic space,
Brings a sudden smile to my weary face,
No matter the soil, the rain, or the weeds,
A daisy girl finds the joy that she needs.
