Gosh, did we ever have a lovely visitor this evening!
We knew immediately that this wee guy was a fledgling by his teeny-tiny peeps — that were constant: Mum, Mum, Mum, I need food! His mum and dad are sure to be close-by keeping an eye on their kiddo and foraging for insects for him. Also, that grey tuft on his wee bum is actually leftover nestling down. Then there’s his tiny tail — his tail feathers haven’t finished growing yet.
Fun Fact: Fledgling Carolina Wrens jump out of the nest before their wing and tail feathers are fully formed. This makes them look unusually small and rotund for their species.
Carolinian Cutie
A fuzzy puffball on our post,
His tiny squeaks sound like a boast.
With tail poked up, a proud wee line,
And downy bum of silver-shine.
He fluttered from the forest green,
The bravest chick you’ve ever seen.
A royal bundle, fierce and small,
The sweetest prince upon our wall.
Sorry, I’m utter crap at shooting birds in motion. Despite lots of studying and practicing, no improvement whatsoever.
