Hedge Bindweed (Calystegia sepium)
Silver-spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus)

Hedge Bindweed is an herbaceous, native, perennial in the Morning-Glory family.  This is a smooth, fast-growing, twining vine which always and only curls (twines) against the sun (counter-clockwise).

Fun Fact:  If you gently pinch or squeeze the large green jackets (bracts) at the bottom of the blossom, the entire trumpet-shaped flower will pop cleanly off the stem, looking exactly like someone jumping out of bed.  Doing exactly that, a tidbit of charming folklore about Hedge Bindweed comes from the old British children’s game called “Granny, Jump out of Bed” which my cousins and I (both sides of the Atlantic) played on the regular!  Did you play too?

Pink Bells

On the breezy crown where the waters meet,
The Hillman dike leads our wandering feet.
Midst rushes green, where marshy water gleams,
A sudden blush of gay summertime dreams.

Pink bells awake with the hot August sun,
Where tangled, curling strands of wild vines run.
Wearing five pointed stars stitched bright and deep,
All along the steep marshland bank they creep.

They ramble along in a cheerful crowd,
A clutch of blossoms, beautiful and proud.
A fleeting glory on our lakeside stroll,
Charming to the eye, soothing to the soul.
