The Trout Lily is an herbaceous perennial of the Lily family that thrives in moist woodlands. Its fanciful names are Yellow Dogtooth Violet and Fawn Lily. The leaves are edible. It is a spring ephemeral, blooming May to June.
Fun fact: Trout Lily, because the speckling on its leaves resemble the body of the Brook Trout.
Woodland Splash of Spring Fire
Golden petals curved and bright,
Hold a secret out of sight.
Deep within each yellow cup,
Orange-red centers fire them up.
They wake up in early spring,
And make the forest floor sing.
Here today. Gone tomorrow.
Leaving no trace of sorrow.
Now sleeping softly underground,
Until next spring when they’ll rebound.
