We have a regular visitor, an Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) that I’ve named Bismarck (our squirrel in Cobourg was Fargo). Squirrels are known to be meticulous groomers, often spending a significant amount of time licking their fur, rubbing their limbs, and using their front paws to wipe their faces and ears. Bismarck put on just such a show for me today:

Can’t go on a date with a mucky face!
Date Night in the Forest
Bismarck steps out from the trees,
A bushy-tailed gent in the breeze.
He climbs to the rail
And arches his tail,
Then washes his face at his ease.
He scrubs up his ears with a twitch,
And scratches a phantom-like itch,
With paws in the air
He preens every hair,
A proper, comical stitch!
But the best part of Bismarck’s display,
Is how he concludes his buffet:
He pulls up his toes,
Right under his nose,
And licks all the forest away!
With each little digit scrubbed bright,
It’s truly a comical sight.
A deck-side pedicure,
Of that I am sure.
He gave me my afternoon delight.

Phantom-like itch.
’Til next time, y’all…

“Just one more fluff-up before I go.”
