The Flower Hour #30: A Wealth of Lilacs

Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris)

Lilacs are synonymous with home for me.  My dad planted a row along the two sides and back of our yard to make a privacy  hedge, and, this time every year, their fragrance was intoxicating.  My bedroom was at the back of the house and, with my window open, I’d fall asleep every night with their sweet fragrance teasing my nose.  It is more than forty years since I’ve lived in that wee house on Joy Drive, but, every whiff of Lilac transports me back again…

Tuesdays have become my favourite day of the week, ever since “discovering” the adorable Terri’s “The Flower Hour” group.  Nothing makes me happier than to “gather” all the blossoms shared to make an imaginary bouquet.  Plus, a great many that are shared are completely foreign to me which makes seeing and learning about them a real treat!  Thank you, Terri, for keeping this prompt going, and to all the other Lens-Artists who so generously share their images!

Please take a moment to visit Terri’s post, have a smile at her oh-so-creative title, and admire both her great photographs and her very interesting narrative — you won’t be sorry you did, promise:

’Til next time, y’all…

Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) and a “surprise” Hoverfly.

Lilacs

A wealth of lilacs have I here,
Their mystic whispers stir my ear.
Their lovely fragrance fills my heart,
As memories their blooms impart.

When I was but a little child,
A lilac bush, untrimmed and wild,
Delighted me with joy untold,
Where shone the sun of purest gold,
I pulled the clustered lilac spray

And breathed their fragrance of the day.
One morning time a lilac hue
Slipped softly o’er the sea of blue.
It seemed that souls of lilacs gone
Had stolen back to rule the dawn.

Fair lilacs of my thousand dreams,
My heart amid you thrills and teems
With thoughts and hopes of life to be
That seeks to win the soul of me.

  1. Beautiful post (and lilacs!) and thank you for the sweet compliments, Pam! I can just imagine you enjoying the lilac aroma at bedtime, I can almost smell those in your pics from here! They are a lovely plant. I have an itty-bitty plant I’m growing from my neighbor’s lilac bush cutting, I can’t wait–couple more years to go.

I’m glad to bring flower links back to the blogosphere. We all still miss Cee and her FOTD prompts. There are 6 other days for someone to start another “flower of the day” feature. If you do one, you will become very popular! 😉

    1. Thank you for the lovely comment! xx
I’ve been thinking a lot about a “flower of the day” – might there be interest in “Wildflower Wednesdays” do you suppose? Or is that too specific? Lots to mull. Have a lovely evening, my friend! xx

      1. Ooh, I like that, Pam! You can set up the parameters any way you want. There are enough wildflowers to make it work! People could also link to Wordless Wednesday too. Think about it. If you would like to chat, you can reach me by email via my blog 😊

  2. Beautiful floral images, Pam! We’ve finally gotten spring-like temperatures here in Fargo, but the spring flowers are still hiding, just in case old man winter has another blow coming. >grin<

    1. 🙂 I think some of ours may have gone into hiding this morning – it was 8℃, feels like 4℃.

      1. Ah, those late spring “return to winter days”!

  3. You’re so right Pam, smells can transport us instantly to other times and places. Lilacs have such a lovely scent. They were my dad’s favorite also and I always think of him when the scent of lilac happens along. Lovely images.

    1. Thank you Tina.

  4. Pam, I really enjoyed this beautiful post. I love how the lilacs bring back memories from your childhood. Your lilac images and poem are wonderful.

    1. Thank you so much! pp
